We focus primarily on the models that are less than 5 cubic feet but sometimes there's a specific refrigerator that's worth making a little bit of extra space for. You may be choosing a compact refrigerator because you are moving into a very small space, but even so, give yourself a little pat on the back. Compact refrigerators are much more energy efficient than the monster models that sit in so many kitchens. By keeping your refrigerator small, you are saving a lot of energy, and that helps both the planet and the coming generations. Of course, you're also reducing your electricty bill, and increasing the odds that you won't buy more food than you can possibly use. Staying small has a lot of benefits, even if they're only the result of having to live in a really small space. Features of Compact Refrigerators With FreezersMany compact refrigerators do not include an auto-defrost feature, as this uses up extra energy, sometimes uses up valuable space, and tends to be considered a nice-but-not-necessary feature for people who want to get the most space they can for their dollar. If you really want the auto-defrost feature, though, there are models that have it.Many of the smaller refrigerator/freezer models do have door sheves that can fit a gallon of milk, plus 2 tall bottles (either of wine or the wider soda bottles). Most also have can dispensers and 2 or 3 glass shelves. Keep in mind that while a manufacturer's specs may say a refrigerator is of a certain size, you may only get about 80% of practical use from the space. If this really becomes a problem, consider taking out one of the shelves and stacking food in plastic containers. If you have the space height-wise, many of the taller compact refrigerators can double as a counter-top. In very small kitchens, counter space is always at a premium, so having even 2-3 extra square feet of room makes a big difference. 2 door refrigerator freezers are fairly easy to come by. Danby, Sunpentown, Avanti, Igloo, Whirlpool, Emerson and Summit all make 2 door models. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports didn't include any of the 2 door models in their tests of compact refrigerators, but some checking of the larger online retailers and review sites like Amazon.com and Epinions.com will show which models people have had the best luck with. |
